Darwin Gray enjoys excellent Chambers & Legal 500 rankings and feedback

November 7, 2018

Once again, we are delighted that the firm has been ranked in both the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners guides.

Our ranked areas of our expertise include Employment Law, Commercial Property, Corporate & Commercial, Property Litigation, Dispute Resolution, Insolvency, Social Housing and Sport.

Legal 500 recognises the ‘very impressive Stephen Thompson’ who leads the ‘very approachable’ Corporate & Commercial team. The team has been noted for providing a ‘pragmatic and personal service’ and for their expertise on the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).

The Employment & HR team’s ‘outstanding level of service’ is described, referring to expertise in ‘day-to-day HR advice and training through to complex restructuring exercises and contentious work’. The team is headed by Partner Fflur Jones, who is considered a ‘leading individual’ and is recommended by a client for delivering a ‘first-class service’. Partner Damian Phillips is also referred to as ‘excellent’ and is noted for his ‘reputation acting for rugby players and coaches on negotiating and drafting the terms of their contracts and on negotiating exits from clubs’. Senior Associate Owen John is also recognised as ‘outstanding’.

Our rankings this year include special mentions for our Senior Associates Gareth Wedge and Catherine Burke who have been named respectively as ‘Up & Coming’ and an ‘Associate to Watch’ in their field of Commercial Property. They are the only two Associates in Wales to have received these rankings in the Chambers guide. Catherine has been described by a client as ‘very efficient, knowledgeable and pragmatic’. Gareth Wedge has also been named as a ‘Next Generation Lawyer’ in this year’s Legal 500, having been praised for his ‘responsiveness and exceptional levels of communication’. The team, headed by the ‘excellent’ and individually ranked lawyer, Donald Gray, was ranked in both guides and has been described as ‘The best in Cardiff for what they do’.

Darwin Gray’s Property Disputes team is also ranked in both guides, including reference to Partner Rhodri Lewis, praised for his ‘excellent advice’ and ‘additional expertise in contentious probate proceedings’. One source commends the team’s ‘ability to promptly assess a particular issue and construct a strategy to deal with the problem.’ In line with the values of the firm of being approachable and accessible and having great reputations collectively and individually, Chambers reports that clients are pleased by the ‘breadth of knowledge and the fast access to specialists’ on offer.

In terms of dispute resolution, the Legal 500 emphasises that we are well-known in the south Wales legal market, ‘frequently working on contentious probate and shareholder claims as well as disputes involving family-run businesses’. The publication also points out that Darwin Gray has ‘been increasingly active on fraud cases’ recently, and has lawyers noted for their expertise in professional negligence, insolvency litigation, breach of natural justice and injunction claims, along with fraud and breach of contract disputes.

To leave the last word to the most important category of reviewer, a client commented when interviewed that: ‘they are a very good firm to work with’, adding: ‘they offer a very personal service and are very pragmatic.’
